What it Takes to be in Business

Saturday, September 22, 11am–1:30pm
Location: PNCA

Instructor: Matthew Abts, Volunteer Lawyer for the Arts

Class Size: 40

Workshop Description:

This workshop will focus on intellectual property creation and use for artists and creatives. Topics to be presented:

Intellectual property introduction (including the definition of a "derivative work" -- a common source of confusion).

Registering your own copyright, with an introduction to the Copyright Office's online ECO registration system.

Enforcing your copyright

Fair use, including a discussion of actual cases and the proper use of terms such as "transformative" or "time-shifting".

About Matthew Abts:

Matthew Abts runs a small law office that specializes in helping low income small or "micro" business entrepreneurs realize their dreams of business ownership.

With economical flat-fee rates for business formation, contract drafting or review, and intellectual property (copyright, trademark, trade secret) services, and free consultation for established clients, he helps small businesses achieve their goals.

Matthew also assists non-profits and companies who put social missions before profits.

Matthew believes in the Lawyers for the Arts movement, and encourages independent artists to seek his assistance for copyright issues -- he regularly represents independent artists in copyright matters.

About our Professional Development Workshops

Some of the hardest things for creative people to develop are the business skills needed to market and sell their creations successfully. Our Saturday morning workshops cover a wide range of topics to benefit creative minds, with local experts as instructors and virtually no barrier to entry. Learn how to photograph your work, find out the best uses for social media, adopt basic financial practices and much more. With intimate learning environments, heavy Q&A sessions and handouts, you can apply topics to your personal needs.

Some seats may be available at the door, but are not guaranteed. Should you decide to pay at the door, we accept cash and checks, made payable to Pacific Northwest College of Art.
